Day 41: Listening More Carefully

"Better sleep brought more awareness rather than relief. A new type of pain and unfamiliar sensations shifted the focus toward caution and observation. Choosing rest, adapting plans, and avoiding overload proved to be the right decisions today."

I woke up at 8:45, finally after a long sleep, though it was far from uninterrupted. Bathroom trips returned, two or three times during the night. Not ideal, but at least I felt more rested overall.

Today introduced something new. The quad pain that had been lingering is gone, but now I feel pain on the left side of the knee. It shows up when I walk or exercise, and that naturally raises concern. It sits close to where the meniscus is, which makes it harder to ignore. I also noticed a rubbery sound or sensation when I walk, especially while bending the knee. From what I understand, this is normal at this stage, likely movement between healing tissue layers. Still, it is strange to feel and impossible not to notice.

Given all that, I decided to make today a proper rest day. I limited myself to extension work, ankle pumping, ice, and elevation. No pushing. Just maintenance.

We went out to visit an old sugar factory, the Ten Drum Cultural Village. It is a massive place. I rented a wheelchair again, which helped initially, but many areas were not easily accessible. My wife ended up doing a lot of the pushing, which was harder on her than expected. We decided to ditch the wheelchair and walk instead.

I got tired, but overall it was manageable. I think the extra rest helped, and maybe I am slowly building a bit more resistance. The kids absolutely loved the place, which made the effort worth it.

On the way back, I did an ice session on the bus. Later, I decided to skip the night market. That turned out to be a very good call. Crowds, standing, walking, noise. Exactly the combination that would have undone the day. I stayed in the room, ordered room service, and actually honored the idea of a rest day.

The kids came back around 21:00. We played a bit, and then something unexpected happened. An earthquake. Strong enough to swing lamps, move beds, and make the walls creak. It was a 7.0 magnitude quake, centered far from us, but still intense. We were told to be prepared for aftershocks. Not exactly comforting when you are on crutches.

Today was not about progress. It was about paying attention. And that matters just as much.
