Day 50: Excitement, Reality, and a Very Clear Lesson

"Travel adrenaline carried the morning, but the knee reminded me who sets the rules. Even short flights still trigger major swelling if recovery is delayed. The day ended well, but not without a strong reminder that travel discipline matters."

We arrived at the airport with four suitcases. One more than when we started. Mostly my wife’s clothes and kids’ toys. At the airport, wheelchair service kicked in immediately. Sweet. Skipping lines, skipping stress, bypassing the general madness. We stopped at the lounge, and twenty-five minutes before boarding, a staff member picked me up and escorted me straight through. No queues, straight to the gate, right on time. Front-row seat again. Book, lunch, and before I knew it, we were in Japan.

After landing, I had to wait until the entire plane cleared before they called me. Me and a small Chinese lady. The first wheelchair arrived. The big one I had used before. Spacious, comfortable, perfect for my leg. I was relieved. Then she took it. Fair enough.

What came next was… something else. A wooden wheelchair. The smallest one I have ever seen. It looked like a toy. I honestly thought they were joking. I asked where the big one was. They said I could wait longer, or take this one now. Better this than nothing. I must have looked ridiculous. A big guy squeezed into a tiny chair. Surprisingly, it rolled better than expected.

Immigration, bags, taxi, and finally the apartment. Feeling good, we decided to do a quick walk around the neighborhood and grab lunch locally. That is when the knee started to speak. Loudly. Swelling came fast. Angry, heavy, tight. I thought a two-hour flight would not affect it much. I was very wrong.

By the time we got back, the knee looked like a balloon. I put on a knee strap and you could clearly see the swelling pushing against it. The shape was distorted. Painful and unsettling. Ice and elevation could not come fast enough. After a short nap, things settled down again.

In the evening, we went out to Shinjuku. Lights, the Godzilla head with the kids, crowds, currency exchange, and dinner in Omoide Yokocho. Cold, busy, lots of walking. Somehow, I handled it reasonably well. A bit of shopping, Uniqlo, electronics, then back home.

Ice and elevation again. The knee calmed down. But the message stayed very clear. I am still far from “normal.” Traveling is still a challenge, and I need to be disciplined. Ice immediately after flights is not optional. Movement needs to be planned, not improvised.

Today was exciting. And educational.
