Day 53: Borrowing Strength From the Mountains

"An early start and a long, demanding loop tested both patience and endurance. Nature, history, and philosophy offered perspective, even as logistics and fatigue pushed limits. The knee held on, but the day clearly asked for more recovery than it received."

Hakone day. We woke up early. Really early. Normally the kids surface around nine or ten, but today we had a train to catch at 8:30. That was rough for all of us. Morning chaos, no time for breakfast, no time for physio. I felt a bit guilty skipping it, but I kept reminding myself that I will be back home soon. At least I had my protein shake before leaving.

We finally arrived in Hakone. Coffee, a late breakfast, and then straight into the loop. Scenic train climbing the mountains, gondola, cable cars, boat across the lake, lunch, and then the bus back. The place is stunning. Mount Fuji in the distance, Lake Ashi calm and wide, everything feeling intentional and balanced. Japan really knows how to frame beauty.

Passing through the sulfur valley, I learned that samurais used to come here to recover after battles. They believed the volcanic waters helped them heal faster. I could not help but smile at that. Will it help my knee just by being here? Probably not, but the idea itself was comforting.

I also learned more about Shinto and how Japanese people approach religion. It is less about rules and more about nature, respect for ancestors, balance, and gratitude. That mindset resonates deeply, especially during recovery. Accept where you are, respect the process, stay balanced.

After lunch, my wife and I decided to go to the famous torii gate by the lake to take a photo. The path was closed, so no picture. That detour made us late for the bus, and we ended up missing our train back to Tokyo by two minutes. Two minutes. Which meant a one-hour wait.

That hour was actually a gift. I went to the bathroom, changed into shorts, and asked the café for ice. Relief. Real relief. The knee settled, swelling eased, and my mood followed.

Then it was back to Tokyo. Straight from nature into chaos. Electronics shopping, then dinner in Shinjuku. The restaurant had low tables, which was not kind to my knee. By the end, I was exhausted and irritated, counting minutes until I could get home, ice, and lie down.

We finally made it back. Long day. Hard day. But also a good one. Full of beauty, reflection, and a quiet hope that recovery does not just happen in exercises, but also in moments like this.
